Dive into the ocean in the Maldives

Crystal-clear turquoise water, spectacular coral reefs and the chance to swim alongside whale sharks — discover why the Maldives is one of the world’s most incredible destinations for a family ocean adventure.

There are plenty of places where you can snorkel, dive and see amazing marine life. But the Maldives takes that experience to another level. The water is so brilliantly blue and clear that the ocean almost doesn’t look real, and under the surface is a world of colourful coral, tropical fish, turtles and rays. And then there’s the big one: your kids can actually swim alongside a whale shark in the wild. This isn’t watching marine life from a boat or behind aquarium glass — it’s getting in the water and experiencing it for yourself.

And it’s not just what’s under the water that makes a Maldives family holiday so special. You can wake up in an overwater villa with the ocean outside your door, spend the morning snorkelling, paddle across a turquoise lagoon in the afternoon and finish the day watching the sunset from the water. Centara Hotels & Resorts make it easy to experience all of this, with spectacular marine adventures, family-friendly activities, watersports, waterparks and plenty of ways for parents and kids to enjoy this extraordinary corner of the world together.

Your kids will swim with whale sharks

There aren’t many family holiday experiences that can match the opportunity to swim alongside one of the ocean’s gentle giants. In the South Ari Atoll, whale sharks can be encountered year-round, with sightings almost daily between May and November.

At Centara Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa in the Maldives, families can head out on a whale shark excursion and, with a little luck, find themselves sharing the water with one of these enormous but gentle creatures. Imagine slipping into the warm Maldivian water, looking down through the blue and suddenly seeing a whale shark several metres long gliding past — then swimming alongside it as it calmly goes about its day.

For kids, it’s the sort of wildlife encounter that feels magical: no aquarium glass, no TV screen, just an incredible animal in its natural environment. And it’s an experience they’re likely to be talking about long after they’ve left the Maldives.

Snorkel straight from the resort

One of the best things about a Maldives holiday with kids is that you don’t need to book an excursion to discover an incredible underwater world. Centara Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa in the Maldives is home to one of the Maldives’ most celebrated house reefs, recognised as one of the best in South Ari Atoll.

Just metres from the beach, families can grab their snorkels and head into the calm, crystal-clear water whenever they like, with visibility of more than 30 metres making it possible to see an incredible variety of marine life from the surface. Colourful coral gardens are home to tropical fish, turtles, rays and all sorts of smaller reef creatures, so even young kids aged around 5–10 can have their own underwater discoveries without needing to venture far from shore.

Learn to dive

Snorkelling is amazing, but diving takes the experience to a whole new level. Below those impossibly blue waters is a spectacular underwater world of colourful coral reefs, huge schools of tropical fish, turtles, rays and reef sharks, with manta rays and whale sharks among the incredible marine life you may encounter.

At Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, kids aged 8+ can start exploring the underwater world with professional diving experiences, while those aged 10+ may work towards Junior Open Water certification, and older kids can also work towards a PADI qualification.

But it’s what happens once you descend beneath the surface that makes diving so incredible. Instead of floating above the reef and catching glimpses of what lies below, you’re suddenly in the middle of it — surrounded by coral, swimming alongside schools of fish and exploring the caves, walls and hidden corners of the reef. You can stay down there for much longer, with the brilliant blue stretching in every direction and the marine life moving all around you. It’s a completely different way to experience the Maldives — and one that kids who love the ocean won’t want to miss.

Get out on the water

Not every family wants to spend their holiday underwater, and that’s where the Maldives’ warm lagoons really come into their own. At Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, families can get out on the water together with activities such as kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

For something more relaxing, the lazy river is perfect for floating around the resort together. Meanwhile, a family sunset cruise offers another chance to enjoy the stunning Maldivian waters as the sun dips below the horizon.

Whether you’re paddling, floating or simply cruising, there are plenty of ways for the whole family to enjoy the water together, at whatever pace suits you.

A waterpark in the Maldives?!

When you picture a holiday in the Maldives, a waterpark probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But at Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, kids can have their tropical island escape and their waterslide fix, too.

The resort’s waterpark adds a completely different kind of family fun, giving kids plenty of opportunities to splash, slide and burn off some energy between beach and ocean adventures. It’s the sort of place where they can happily spend hours racing down waterslides, cooling off in the pools and generally making a whole lot of noise — while parents get to enjoy watching them have a ball.

You can spend one day discovering colourful fish, another paddling across the lagoon, then devote another day to the waterpark. Sometimes the best plan is to follow the kids to the nearest waterslide!

Explore the ocean without getting in it

At Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, families can discover the incredible marine world of the Maldives through experiences that bring them closer to the ocean without necessarily getting wet.

Marine excursions take families out onto the surrounding waters to discover the rich marine life, while glass-bottom boat experiences offer an awesome view beneath the surface without anyone having to put on a snorkel. It’s a great way for younger children to spot colourful fish and coral, or for grandparents and other family members who would rather stay dry to see what lies beneath the waves.

And there are plenty of other ways to experience the Maldivian ocean, from dolphin cruises and fishing trips to submarine excursions.

Where is the Maldives?

The Maldives (pronounced Mol-deeves) is in the Indian Ocean, around 1,000 kilometres south-west of Sri Lanka. There are nearly 1,200 islands in the archipelago grouped into 26 atolls, of which only around 200 are inhabited. The two chains of islands stretch across the equator, leading to its tropical climate.

How to get to the Maldives

Tourists fly into the capital, Malé, which lies roughly in the middle. There are no direct flights from Australia to Malé International Airport (also known as Velana International Airport), so most travellers fly on Singapore Airlines with a stop in Singapore. Emirates and Etihad Airways are among the other carriers that fly from Australia to Malé. From Malé, it’s a 25-minute seaplane transfer to Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives or a quick speedboat ride to The Atollia by Centara Hotels & Resorts.

Best time of year to visit the Maldives

The Maldives has a warm and humid climate with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 32°C throughout the year. The southwest monsoon (wet season) is from mid-May to November, while the northeast monsoon (dry season) is from January to March.
